There have been hundreds of video games that were adapted into films, with at least 40 that were in the works in the past year. Hollywood is finally learning what us gamers have always known. There’s definitely money to be made in breathing life into popular video game characters on the big screen. 

However, many gamers and movie-goers alike weren’t privy to the fact that a Dead by Daylight theatrical release was in the works. Surprisingly, the team behind the iconic horror video game franchise announced it in March 2023. Yes. They posted a blog about it to their official website that far back. 

What is Dead by Daylight about?

For those who are reading this and wondering “What’s a Dead by Daylight?”, it’s a multi-player video game that was released on July 14, 2016 by Behavior Interactive. It is a mix of survival horror, fighting, and action-adventure. It’s a 4-versus-1 match-up where you and 3 of your besties have one goal only. You need to survive long enough to repair generators that power an exit gate so you can flee a horror themed map together. Only you are hunted down by the 4th player who is “The Killer” while you are out here fighting for your digital life. 

The Killer’s goal as a player is to use its powers and abilities to capture as many survivors to sacrifice to The Entity. While the Survivor can’t harm the killer, their only plan is to help each other and help themselves to make it to the end of the round. Thoughts and prayers.

There are over 40 Killers in Dead by Daylight, and the list continues to grow. 24 of them are original characters that were created specifically for the game. However, there are many popular licensed characters that adds to the allure of the game, and boosts its notoriety. Such notable characters are Michael Myers, Freddy Krueger, Ghostface, the Demogorgon, Pyramid Head, Pinhead, little itty bitty Chucky, that girl from The Ring, and others. 

While I’ve never played Dead by Daylight, I’ve watched a variety of streamers scream, jump, and digitally run for their lives in this foolishness that has amassed over 60 million players worldwide. With ratings such as 9/10 from GameStop, 9/10 from IGN, and 88/100 from PCGamer, the decision to treat us to a movie adaption of Dead by Daylight is a no-brainer.

What we know about the Dead by Daylight movie

After learning who the brains and the muscle are behind the new Dead by Daylight movie, I can safely say that we are in good hands. Blumhouse-Atomic Monster got the movie rights to it in 2023. Atomic Monster has been behind powerhouse movies such as The Conjuring Franchise, the Salem’s Lot 2024 remake, and Mortal Kombat I and II to name a few. They are no stranger to horror or video game adaptations.  

Blumhouse Productions turns water to wine by creating high profit cash cows from low budget films. They’ve been behind a score of movies that are little-known, and some that are wildly popular such as the Insidious franchise. It’s a personal favorite of mine. I will get in the kidnapper van if there’s a promise to watch them. Other well-known titles by Blumhouse are Get Out, Mr. Harrigan’s Phone, the Paranormal Activity franchise, and the Purge franchise.

Blumhouse Productions merged with Atomic Monster in 2024, operating as separate entities but also come together for films such as M3GAN. Initially, Alexandre Aja was set to direct, but he’s directing Under Paris 2 for Netflix, and had to reduce his role in Dead by Daylight’s big screen debut. He still kept his spoon in the pot, writing alongside David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick. Say his name 3 times fast. 

Johnson-McGoldrick wrote on The Conjuring franchise, Insidious, the Orphan, and the Aquaman franchise with Blumhouse. He’s a veteran among their doors. While I was no fan of the final Conjuring movie, I am still for certain that we are still in for a treat—especially since he’s pinned 14 episodes for The Walking Dead. I’ve unapologetically watched the series 3 times. Aja is best noted for the 2006 horror classic The Hills Have Eyes and international success Haute Tension. 

The movie is still in its writing phase with no plot or cast that has been released as of yet. While we have minimal information, a release date for the Upcoming Dead by Daylight movie would be around late 2027 to early 2028. There’s also rumors of a Dead by Daylight tv show in the works.
